Should I see a counsellor?

University poses many challenges. Many students experience stress due to the adjustments required by their studies and the multiple roles in their lives. Common issues students identify are feeling worried, anxious or depressed, having relationship problems or underachievement in their studies.

Most students can benefit from seeing a counsellor at some point in their university experience.

What can I expect?
  • Strategies for better coping.
  • Support and guidance for making sometimes difficult changes.
  • To speak honestly about your state of mind, feelings and disappointments.
  • Caring, gentle challenge without any judgemen.
How long will it take

Many clients benefit from a single 50 minute session with a counsellor. Occasionally, for complex concerns, you may choose to meet for more sessions. At any time, are welcome to return for further help with the same or with a new situation.

Do I need to give my name?

At your first appointment the Administrative Assistant will ask your name, local mailing address, phone number, faculty and year of study. This information is for internal use only and helps us track Student Resource Centre statistics.

Is it Confidential?

All sessions at the Student Resource Centre are confidential (except under emergency situations involving clear and imminent danger to yourself or others). What you share with a counsellor will be held in confidence. In addition, the identity of those who use the Counselling Centre is also regarded as confidential.

Are counsellors professional and well qualified?

Yes. Whether your concerns are personal, social, academic, or vocational you will find professional counsellors and staff whose training and experience uniquely fit the university setting. For more information about our qualifications and special interests, just click on Staff Profiles.
